The FOOPA Spring Social Calendar is detailed below. Please book early for the required event(s) to avoid disappointment

FOOPA SOCIAL EVENTS SPRING 2009
For our events at the Royal Naval Club, bar meals are usually available from 6.30pm, but call 92 825924 on the day to confirm. Non-members are very welcome at our events provided they join FOOPA during the evening at our free events or at the time of booking for day trips.

Local Knowledge Quiz
Thursday 19th February 7.30 pm at the Royal Naval Club
A convivial and competitive evening which never quite gets out of hand! We make up teams of 4 on arrival so just come along - to both use your knowledge and learn more about Old Portsmouth and other corners of the city. New members especially welcome.

The World of Cruise Ships
Thursday 12th March 7.30 pm at the Royal Naval Club
With more cruise ships than ever operating in and out of Portsmouth in 2009, local resident Alison West will tell us about her working life with a leading cruise company and bring us up to date with this fast expanding sector of the tourism industry.

Day Trip to Highgrove House Gardens
Thursday 16th April. Meet at the Cathedral Bus Stop 8.00 am
Highgrove House has been the private residence of the Prince of Wales since 1980. During his time there its garden has become a flagship for the organic movement both in terms of environmental sustainability and natural beauty – a reflection of the Prince’s philosophy that it is better to work with Nature than against it. Group visits are by invitation only and we are especially fortunate to be going there at Springtime. Lunch will be at nearby Westonbirt Arboretum.

Day Trip to Salisbury
Saturday 9th May. Meet at the Cathedral Bus Stop 9.15 am
If you missed out on our visit to Edwards Heath’s house and garden last year do not hesitate to book up for this second opportunity to enjoy these and other visitor attractions in and around the Cathedral Close. The rooms at ‘Arundells’ display many photographs, paintings and memorabilia reflecting Sir Edward’s remarkable life as a politician, yachtsman, musician and art collector. The guided tours will be after lunch in small groups. Apart from the Cathedral there are 3 other additional visit options in the Close before or after your house tour: Mompesson House and Garden ( Queen Anne period, with wine glass collection, bring your NT card); the City and County Museum and the Wilts & Berks Military Museum, or you can have a stroll by the river and across the water meadows.

Day Trip to Bletchley Park
Wednesday 10th June. Meet at the Cathedral Bus Stop 8.00 am
Centered on a splendid Victorian mansion in a parkland setting, this famous site now houses a wide range of World War 2 - related exhibitions, in addition to telling how Alan Turing and others broke the enigma code at a critical point in the Battle of the Atlantic. Other displays are a major collection of Winston Churchill memorabilia, a vintage car collection and the National Museum of Computing. Our visit will include coffee on arrival and an introductory talk from our own guide for the day. Lunch and picnic facilities available.
